These hotspots are reservoir of numerous varieties of plants, mammals, insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles and many un-discovered species. Himalayas, Western Ghats, North East India and Sundaland have unique distinction of having numerous endemic species not found anywhere else. After bird watching, Butterfly watching is the most popular hobby throughout the world. India with its uniqueness in flora and fauna has a distinct place in Butterfly watching. Western Ghats and North East India in between hold record number of Butterfly species and our main area of Butterfly watching centre around these two spots.
North East India Butterfly Tour
With dense forests, numerous rivers, marshy habitats and grasslands, North East India hosts many rare and endangered Butterfly species endemic to this region. There are many spots considered to be prime areas for Butterfly watching in Sikkim, Auranchal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam and Nagaland. In between these places the number of Butterfly species can exceed 600-700.
Western India Butterfly Tour
Kerala’s Western Ghats falls within the 36 ‘biodiversity hotspots’ of the world. It is home to more than 430 birds and 340+ butterfly species, large numbers of these endemic to the region. This is also one of eight ‘centres of endemism’ in the Indian Subcontinent. Comprising of the largest butterfly in India, the Southern or Western Ghats Birdwing (Troides minos) with a wingspan of about 25 cms to the smallest, the Grass Jewel (Zizula hylax) with only 1.5 to 2 cm wingspan, the Kerala butterfly fauna is rich, diverse and scientifically very interesting.
This tour will cover the Salim Ali sanctuary at Thattekkad, the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the high altitude rain forests and grasslands at Munanr and the dry scrub forests at Chinnar WLS.
